About Creag Thoraraidh

Rising steeply above the village of Shieldaig, this rugged Wester Ross Marilyn offers an exceptional perspective on the Torridon giants. Its terrain is quintessential Northwest Highlands: a rough mix of heather, bog, and Lewisian gneiss slabs. The summit provides a grandstand view across Loch Torridon toward the looming mass of Liathach.

Did You Know?

  • The name is likely a hybrid of the Gaelic 'Creag' (crag) and a Norse personal name such as 'Thorard', reflecting the deep Viking influence along the Wester Ross coastline.
  • From the summit, the view north across the water is dominated by the 'Horns' of Beinn Alligin and the massive quartzite terraces of Liathach, which appear even more imposing when viewed from this lower coastal elevation.
  • Despite its modest height of 404 metres, its status as a Marilyn is due to its topographic isolation, separated from the higher Applecross hills by the low pass of the A896 road.
  • The hill acts as a dramatic backdrop to Shieldaig, a village established in 1810 to train sailors for the Napoleonic Wars and to promote the local herring industry.
  • In typical West Highland fashion, the map’s wide-spaced contours suggest a straightforward stroll, but the reality involves a determined tussle with thick heather and the occasional deceptive peat hag.
