About Creag na Cathaig

Rising above the divide between Glen Clova and Glen Prosen, this heather-clad Angus summit offers a quiet alternative to the nearby Munros. The terrain is typical of the eastern Grampians—gentle and rounded, yet commanding clear views southward across the Vale of Strathmore and north toward the rugged Corrie Kilbo.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Scottish Gaelic, the name translates as the 'Crag of the Jackdaw,' referring to the birds that frequent the steeper, rocky outcrops found on its southern slopes.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for surveying the classic U-shaped glacial profile of Glen Clova, one of the most celebrated glens in the southern Grampians.
  • To the northwest, the horizon is dominated by the sprawling plateaus of Driesh and Mayar, which sit significantly higher than this 662-metre peak.
  • Its position on the southern fringe of the Highlands means that on a clear day, the view extends far beyond the mountains to the Sidlaw Hills and the fertile plains of Angus.
  • It remains a remarkably lonely spot compared to the nearby Munro circuits; the only crowd you are likely to encounter is a drift of hardy hill sheep or a covey of red grouse.
