About Creag-mheall Mor

Sitting in the remote heart of the North West Highlands, this Hump occupies the rugged ground between Glen Cannich and Glen Strathfarrar. It offers a quieter alternative to the neighbouring giants, providing a prime vantage point for surveying the sprawling ridgelines of the Monar Munros and the deep waters of Loch Mullardoch.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Creag Mheall Mhòr, which translates to the 'Big Rocky Lump.' It is a fittingly literal description for this rounded, heather-clad summit that stands out against the deeper glens on either side.
  • The summit provides a spectacular, front-row view of the massive south-facing corries of the Glen Strathfarrar Munros, most notably the steep slopes of Sgùrr na Lapaich and Carn nan Gobhar across the water.
  • Though it stands at 628 metres, the approach from the Loch Mullardoch dam involves negotiating a maze of peat hags and pathless moorland that requires careful navigation in poor visibility.
  • This is one of the better spots in the region for seeing the impact of the 1950s Affric-Beauly hydro-electric scheme, as it looks directly down onto the 48-metre-high Mullardoch Dam.
  • Expect to have the summit to yourself; most walkers in this area are focused on the high-altitude 'Mullardoch Round' on the opposite side of the loch, leaving this hill to the deer and the occasional eagle.
