About Creag Loisgte

Tucked away in the wild terrain south of Braemar, this 795-metre Hump offers a rugged, pathless experience characteristic of the Mounth. Though often overlooked for its loftier neighbours, the summit provides a clear, uncrowded perspective across the deep trench of Glen Ey towards the high, stony plateaus of the Cairngorm giants.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Burnt Crag', likely a reference to the dark, weathered appearance of its rocky outcrops or perhaps a historical instance of muirburn—the traditional practice of burning heather to encourage new growth for grouse and livestock.
  • From its summit, hikers are rewarded with an expansive view of the sprawling Beinn a' Ghlò massif to the west and the distinctive, bulky profile of An Socach across the upper reaches of Glen Ey.
  • As a Hump (a hill with a prominence of at least 100 metres), it possesses a physical stature that guarantees a sense of isolation, often missed by those rushing toward the nearby Munros.
  • Despite being named the 'Burnt Crag', a visitor is significantly more likely to find themselves negotiating a saturated peat hag than encountering any evidence of actual heat.
