About Creag a' Mhaigh

Rising above the upper Spey valley near Newtonmore, this substantial Tump offers a quieter alternative to the nearby Monadhliath giants. The terrain is typical of the region—heather-clad and occasionally boggy—leading to a summit with expansive views across to the high plateau of Creag Meagaidh and the Ben Alder hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Creag a' Mhaigh, translating to 'Crag of the Plain', which likely refers to its position overlooking the broad, level strath of the upper River Spey.
  • The summit provides a grandstand view of the 'Window' on Creag Meagaidh, the famous notch between the crags of Coire Ardair and the main plateau to the west.
  • Often climbed from the A86 near Laggan, the hill can be paired with the smaller summit of An Dun to the east for a circular route that explores the quieter moorland between the Spey and the Corrieyairack Pass.
  • Despite standing at a respectable 715m, it remains largely overlooked by list-tickiers; it is a hill for those who value solitude and the potential sight of a golden eagle over a crowded summit cairn.
