About Creag a' Chrochaidh

Sitting high above Glen Tilt near Blair Atholl, this rounded Grampian summit offers a quieter alternative to the popular Beinn a’ Ghlo massif across the valley. The terrain is classic Highland moorland: deep heather and occasional peat hags, providing a rugged, pathless vantage point for surveying the steep flanks of Beinn a’ Ghuilbin.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, likely meaning 'Crag of the Hanging.' In the Highlands, such names are frequently associated with historical sites of local justice or execution, though any specific story regarding this hill has been lost to history.
  • It is often climbed as part of a longer circuit from the Old Bridge of Tilt, typically paired with its neighbour Beinn a’ Ghuilbin to the north via a high, boggy col.
  • The summit offers an exceptional perspective on the complex ridge of Beinn a’ Ghlo to the east and looks directly down the long, glacial trench of Glen Tilt toward the Pass of Killiecrankie.
  • Despite standing at over 2,300 feet and requiring a significant walk-in through the Forest of Atholl, the hill carries the slightly unglamorous classification of a 'Tump'—a category based on its 15-metre drop rather than its impressive stature.
