About Cona' Mheall

Rising as a steep, rocky ridge to the east of Beinn Dearg, this Munro offers a rugged contrast to the more rounded forms nearby. Most walkers encounter its boulder-strewn slopes while completing the classic circuit from Inverlael, where the summit provides a dramatic, plunging view down into the depths of Gleann Beag.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Cona’ Mheall, which is generally translated as 'Hill of the Dogs'. This likely points to the area's history as a hunting ground or a former haunt for wolves in the remote Wester Ross wilderness.
  • It is usually climbed via the high col of Bealach nan Nimhe—the 'Pass of Poison'—which links it to Beinn Dearg. Despite the intimidating name, the pass is simply an atmospheric gateway to the mountain's rocky summit ridge.
  • The summit offers a unique vantage point of the massive eastern cliffs of Beinn Dearg, which drop nearly 300 metres into the corrie below, alongside clear views north towards the unmistakable silhouettes of Suilven and Cul Mor.
  • The terrain here is notably different from its neighbours; while much of the range is covered in moss and grass, Cona' Mheall is capped with a vast field of quartzite boulders that can be particularly treacherous when slick with rain or ice.
  • Despite its rugged character, many hikers treat this peak as a tired 'out-and-back' detour at the end of a long day, viewing it less as a mountain and more as a final logistical hurdle before the long walk back to the car.
