About Cnoc Coinnich

Situated in the rugged Ardgoil peninsula, this grassy Corbett gained fame in 2016 when a resurvey promoted it from Graham status by a single metre. It offers a softer, more rounded ascent compared to its jagged Arrochar neighbours, serving as an excellent viewpoint for the Firth of Clyde and Loch Long.

Did You Know?

  • The name Cnoc Còinnich comes from Scottish Gaelic and translates as 'Mossy Hill.' This is a fitting description for its terrain, which is largely comprised of damp grass and moorland, lacking the rocky, shattered character of the nearby Arrochar Alps.
  • The hill was the subject of significant interest in the walking community in 2016; after being resurveyed at the request of the Scottish Mountaineering Club, its height was corrected from 762m to 763.5m, officially moving it from a Graham to a Corbett.
  • Its location makes it a staple for those walking the Cowal Way, a 57-mile long-distance path. The hill is most commonly climbed from the Coilessan bealach, often in a single outing with its neighbour, The Brack.
  • From the summit cairn, walkers are rewarded with a rare perspective of the Arrochar Alps, looking north toward the distinctively notched profile of The Cobbler and the massive bulk of Beinn Imair.
  • Having 'grown' by just enough to qualify as a Corbett, the hill now enjoys a level of foot traffic that its 2015 Graham-self could only have dreamed of.
