About Cnapan a' Choire Odhair Mhoir

Situated in the rolling Cromdale Hills south-east of Grantown-on-Spey, this heather-clad summit offers a wild, quiet alternative to the busier Cairngorm peaks. At just under 2000 feet, it provides a sprawling vantage point over the Spey Valley and across to the distinctive northern corries of the high plateau.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, meaning 'the hill of the big dun-coloured corrie'. Cnapan describes a small, rounded hill, while odhar refers to a brownish-grey or sallow hue, likely reflecting the seasonal colours of the surrounding moorland.
  • The hill forms part of the Cromdale ridge, which was the site of the 1690 Battle of Cromdale. This Jacobite defeat was later immortalised in the traditional folk song 'The Haughs of Cromdale'.
  • From the summit, the broad silver ribbon of the River Spey can be seen snaking through the valley floor near the village of Advie to the north-west.
  • Falling just 2.3 metres short of the 605-metre threshold required to be a Graham, the hill remains an overlooked Tump, ensuring its peat hags stay much quieter than the nearby Munros.
