About Carn nan Sgliat

Overlooking the village of Braemar, this heather-clad Hump offers an accessible escape from the valley floor. While overshadowed by the nearby Cairngorm giants, the broad summit rewards walkers with a clear view of the winding River Dee and the rugged northern corries of Lochnagar, which dominate the eastern horizon.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Cairn of the Slates', likely referring to the fragmented metamorphic rock scattered across its upper slopes.
  • Part of the ascent can be made via the Queen’s Drive, a historic carriage track built specifically for Queen Victoria to enjoy the views of the Dee valley without the exertion of a steep climb.
  • To the south and west, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point for studying the sprawling layout of Braemar and the massive, rounded bulk of the neighboring hill, Morrone.
  • The view to the north looks directly across the valley to Invercauld House and the dense pine forests of Ballochbuie, which is one of the largest remaining tracts of the ancient Caledonian Forest.
  • Despite its proximity to a popular tourist hub, its status as a Hump rather than a Munro means you are far more likely to share the summit with a mountain hare than another walker.
