About Carn na Dubh Choille

Rising from the remote moorlands of the North West Highlands, this prominent Marilyn offers a rugged, pathless ascent through classic heather and peat terrain. Though modest in height, its isolated position provides a fantastic vantage point for studying the iconic Torridonian sandstone peaks of Assynt to the west.

Did You Know?

  • The name Càrn na Dubh Choille translates from Gaelic as the 'Cairn of the Black Wood,' a reference to the ancient Caledonian forest that once covered these now-stark Highland hillsides.
  • From the summit, the distinctive profiles of Cul Mòr and Cul Beag are clearly visible to the west, while the sprawling mass of Ben More Assynt dominates the view to the north.
  • Due to its location in a vast area of peat bogs and small lochans, the hill is most often approached from the A837 near Ledmore, requiring a keen eye for navigation across trackless ground.
  • As a Hump—a hill with a hundred metres of prominence—it ensures you climb a fair portion of its total height regardless of which side you approach from.
