About Carn Meilich

Situated on Skye’s Duirinish peninsula, this 466-metre Hump offers a wild, often pathless trek through rugged moorland. While overshadowed by the nearby MacLeod's Tables, the summit provides an unimpeded perspective across The Minch towards the Outer Hebrides, with the distinctive flat tops of Healabhal Mhòr dominating the landward view.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, with Càrn meaning a rocky hill or cairn, while Meilich likely stems from meileach, meaning 'bleating'—a reference to its historical use as grazing land.
  • It is situated in the remote Duirinish peninsula, a landscape characterized by dramatic sea cliffs and the nearby basalt plateaus of Healabhal Mhòr and Healabhal Bheag.
  • The summit offers a clear line of sight across the water to the hills of North Uist and South Uist on a clear day.
  • While officially a Hump, the surrounding terrain ensures that reaching the summit with dry boots is generally considered a more significant achievement than the 466-metre ascent.
