About Carn Mairg

Rising as the highest point of the four-Munro circuit north of Glen Lyon, this peak stands out for its distinctly rocky, boulder-strewn summit plateau. While its neighbours are largely grassy, its crest offers a rugged character and clear views across to the distinctive whaleback profile of Schiehallion.

Geology
You are hiking across a foundation of gritty, sand-like rock and dark, flaky layers. These durable stones create the rugged landscape beneath your feet.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'Càrn na Mairc', most commonly interpreted as the 'Cairn of the Mark' or 'Cairn of the Boundary', likely referring to its prominent position on the edge of the high ground overlooking Glen Lyon.
  • It serves as the culminating point of a popular horseshoe walk known as the Invervar Munros, a high-level circuit that also bags Carn Gorm, Meall Garbh, and Meall nan Aighean in a single outing.
  • The summit is notable for its extensive fields of quartzite boulders and several rocky tors, a geological contrast to the otherwise smooth, mossy ridges that characterise this part of the Grampians.
  • The view north is exceptionally focused, looking directly across the depths of Gleann Mòr to the southern flanks of Schiehallion, while the western horizon is dominated by the massive, sprawling bulk of the Ben Lawers range.
  • While the walking is generally straightforward, the summit plateau’s boulder fields have a habit of making even the most expensive trekking poles feel entirely redundant and occasionally quite obstructive.
