About Carn Eilrig

Rising as a sharp, heather-clad cone above the Scots pines of Rothiemurchus Forest, this prominent landmark guards the northern entrance to the Lairig Ghru. Often bypassed for the higher Cairngorm plateaus, its summit offers a uniquely framed perspective straight through the great pass between the cliffs of Lurcher’s Crag and Braeriach.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Càrn Eilrig, which translates as the 'cairn of the deer trap'. An eilrig was a specific landscape feature—usually a narrowing or a funnel-shaped pass—used by hunters to drive red deer into a confined space for easier culling.
  • Despite being dwarfed by the 4,000ft giants nearby, the hill’s sharp, symmetrical profile makes it one of the most recognisable landmarks in the Cairngorms when viewed from Aviemore or the Strathspey valley.
  • The summit provides a spectacular 'front row seat' into the depths of the Lairig Ghru, looking directly at the steep, scree-covered flanks of Lurcher's Crag and the massive northern corries of Braeriach.
  • Walkers often combine the hill with a traverse of the Chalamain Gap, a narrow, boulder-filled cleft created by glacial meltwater that sits just to the south of the summit.
  • It is the primary victim of Cairngorm ambition; thousands of hikers photograph its perfect cone every year while marching past it to reach the higher plateaus, yet relatively few ever actually stand on its cairn.
