About Carn Ban Mor

Standing as the western sentinel of the vast Moine Mhor plateau, this high Munro Top provides one of the finest approaches in the Cairngorms. The well-graded stalker’s path from Glen Feshie makes the steep climb feel manageable, eventually revealing a stony summit with dramatic views into the deep trench of the Feshie glen.

Did You Know?

  • The name comes from the Gaelic Càrn Bàn Mòr, meaning 'Big White Cairn', likely referring to the pale granite boulders scattered across the plateau or the tendency for snow to linger on its high, exposed shoulders.
  • The ascent from Achlean is home to one of the most celebrated stalker's paths in the Highlands, a masterfully engineered track that tames the steep western slopes with perfectly pitched zig-zags.
  • While classified as a Munro Top of Sgòr Gaoith, it marks the physical transition from the lush pine forests of Glen Feshie to the sub-arctic wilderness of the Moine Mhor (Great Moss).
  • From the summit, the view west across the Spey Valley is dominated by the long, rolling silhouettes of the Monadhliath, while to the east, the massive bulk of Braeriach looms over the plateau.
  • Despite being named a 'big' cairn, the summit plateau is so expansive and level that the landmark can appear surprisingly modest until you are standing directly on top of it.
