About Carn Ban

Set within the rolling, high-altitude wilderness of the Monadhliath, this expansive plateau summit offers a true sense of scale. Though classified as a Munro Top, it actually stands higher than its parent peak, Geal Charn. The terrain is typical of the range: mossy, peat-scarred, and rewarding for those seeking isolation away from the busier Cairngorm giants.

Did You Know?

  • The name Càrn Bàn translates from Gaelic as 'White Cairn'. This likely refers to the pale quartzite stones scattered across its upper reaches or the tendency for snow to linger in the shallow depressions of the high plateau long into the spring.
  • In an unusual quirk of Scottish hill classification, Carn Ban is nearly 16 metres higher than its 'parent' Munro, Geal Charn. Despite its superior elevation, it was relegated to Munro Top status because Geal Charn was historically perceived as the more significant and distinct peak of the massif.
  • The summit provides an exceptional grandstand view east across the Spey Valley to the Cairngorm massif. From here, the dramatic, shattered eastern face of Sgor Gaoith is clearly visible, appearing as a sharp edge dropping into Gleann Einich.
  • The surrounding Monadhliath plateau is notoriously featureless and navigationally demanding. On the approach from Newtonmore or Gleann Ballach, the rounded nature of the slopes means that in mist, the summit cairn only reveals itself at the very last moment.
  • It is a prime destination for the hillwalker who appreciates the 'Monadhliath trudge'—a specialized gait required to navigate miles of undulating peat hags and high-altitude bog while maintaining a dignified, if slightly damp, composure.
