About Carn a' Choire Leith

Rising above the Great Glen near Fort Augustus, this rounded Hump offers a quiet escape from the busier Munro circuits. Its heather-clad slopes lead to a broad summit plateau, providing a superb vantage point for watching the weather roll across the Great Glen towards the Monadhliath mountains.

Geology
This fell is formed from the Tarvie Psammite Formation. It consists of ancient sand layers that were compressed and hardened into a durable, solid rock.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from Scottish Gaelic, translating as the 'Cairn of the Grey Corrie,' likely a reference to the muted, stony tones of the hollows carved into its flanks.
  • The summit provides a commanding perspective of the Great Glen fault line, with the northern waters of Loch Ness visible to the east and the rugged peaks of the South Glen Shiel Ridge lining the western horizon.
  • Despite its modest height, the hill’s position makes it an excellent 'weather-watcher' spot, as it sits at a topographical crossroads where Atlantic systems often collide with the drier air of the eastern Highlands.
  • It is the kind of hill where you are far more likely to startle a red deer or a grouse than encounter another human being, which is perhaps its most significant navigational hazard.
