About Canisp

Rising from the Lewisian gneiss moorland of Assynt, this massive Corbett is defined by its white quartzite scree and tiered sandstone architecture. Though often overshadowed by its neighbour Suilven, the broad summit of Canisp offers an unparalleled vantage point over the chaotic Inverpolly landscape and the Minch.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse 'kambsnípa', meaning 'point of the comb' or 'ridge-peak'. This reflects the significant Norse influence in Sutherland, where seafaring invaders named prominent inland landmarks to assist with coastal navigation.
  • The mountain's structure is a geological layer cake: a massive base of billion-year-old Torridonian Sandstone topped with a cap of much whiter Cambrian Quartzite. This gives the upper slopes their distinctive shimmering, grey appearance when viewed from the A837.
  • The summit offers what many consider the definitive view of Suilven. From this height, you can trace the entire undulating spine of your famous neighbour, looking out across the 'knock and lochan' landscape toward the waters of Enard Bay.
  • Most walkers approach from the road near Loch Awe, following a long and often exceptionally boggy track through the Glencanisp Forest. The final ascent involves navigating fields of shattered quartzite blocks that can be surprisingly slick in the typical Sutherland damp.
  • While Suilven attracts the international crowds and the photographers, Canisp remains the preferred choice for those seeking a quieter day out with significantly less competition for the summit cairn.
