About Burgiehill

Rising above the Spey Valley near Grantown-on-Spey, this modest Marilyn offers a quiet alternative to the high Cairngorm plateaus. Mostly cloaked in commercial forestry, the summit provides a sudden, framed vista across the Strath towards the prominent rounded ridge of the Cromdale Hills and the distant northern Corries.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Burgie' is likely derived from the Scots 'burgh', suggesting a historical association with a fort or defensive settlement, though the modern slopes are now better known for commercial timber.
  • Due to its 173 metres of prominence, the summit offers a surprisingly expansive view of the winding River Spey and the heather-clad slopes of the nearby Hills of Cromdale.
  • The approach is primarily via a network of forest tracks, making it a reliable choice for a quick ascent when the higher Cairngorm peaks are lost to cloud or heavy snow.
  • Reaching the top grants you the distinction of summiting a Marilyn, despite the fact you are standing nearly 400 metres lower than the car park at the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre.
