About Burach

Rising above the Great Glen south of Fort Augustus, this Marilyn marks the northern edge of the Monadhliath range. While its heathery slopes are often rugged and peat-haggish, the summit provides a commandingly clear perspective looking straight down the southern reaches of Loch Ness and across the surrounding plateaus.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic 'bùrach', which translates as 'digging' or 'burrowing', but in a topographical sense refers to a 'huddle' or 'heap', describing the uneven, knobby character of the summit ridge.
  • Despite its proximity to the popular Corrieyairack Pass, the hill is relatively quiet, with most walkers approaching from the forest tracks of the Great Glen to the north or west.
  • The summit offers a specific and impressive 'end-on' view of Loch Ness, providing a perspective of the Great Glen fault line that few other Graham-class hills can match.
  • In modern Gaelic slang, a 'bùrach' is often used to describe a 'right mess'—an observation that feels increasingly accurate the deeper you sink into the bogs on its eastern flank.
