About Bow

Standing as a satellite peak to the south of the Merrick, this 613-metre summit offers a quiet alternative to its more famous neighbour. The terrain is typical of the Galloway Highlands, featuring rugged grass and granite, overlooking the sprawling, peat-rich expanse of the Silver Flowe National Nature Reserve to the east.

Geology
The path beneath your feet is built from ancient layers of hardened mud and gritty sandstone. These stones form the sturdy foundation of Bow.

Did You Know?

  • The name is likely a descriptive one, referring to the rounded, arched profile the hill presents when viewed from the lower ground of the Trool Forest.
  • Situated on the southern edge of the 'Awful Hand' range, Bow is often passed over by those heading straight for the Merrick, the highest point in southern Scotland.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point over the Silver Flowe, a vast and ancient blanket bog system that is considered one of the most important Ramsar sites in the UK.
  • Though it clears the 2,000-foot mark by just eleven feet, Bow manages to maintain a sense of isolation that its busier neighbours lack.
