About Bord Mor

Rising above the prehistoric landscapes of Machrie Moor, this broad heather-clad Hump offers a gentler perspective of Arran than the jagged northern peaks. Its flat-topped summit provides an excellent vantage point over the Kilbrannan Sound towards Kintyre, making it a quiet, atmospheric escape from the island's busier trails.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Bòrd Mòr, meaning 'Big Table'. This describes the hill’s notably flat, plateau-like summit, a profile that stands in stark contrast to the dramatic, jagged granite ridges found in the north of the island.
  • From the summit cairn, the view looks directly down onto the Machrie Moor Standing Stones. Beyond the island's coastline, the Kilbrannan Sound opens up, revealing the Kintyre Peninsula and, on exceptionally clear days, the distant Paps of Jura.
  • Unlike the northern Arran hills which are composed of granite, Bord Mor sits on the island's southern sedimentary and volcanic rocks, resulting in the rounded moorland character typical of this part of the Isle of Arran.
  • The name suggests a grand banquet surface, but any visitor will find the 'table' is set exclusively with a thick, uncompromising carpet of heather and the occasional peat hag.
