Did You Know?

  • The name 'King's Seat' is thought to mark a spot where ancient Pictish monarchs sat to watch the hunt or preside over ceremonies. Birnam itself likely comes from the Gaelic 'Braonan', meaning a damp place or a place of droplets, reflecting the mist-prone slopes of the Tay valley.
  • Immortalised in Shakespeare's Macbeth, the hill is the legendary home of 'Birnam Wood'. While the ancient forest that supposedly marched toward Dunsinane is long gone, the Birnam Oak by the River Tay is considered a surviving remnant of that medieval woodland.
  • Near the summit lies 'Duncan's Camp', an Iron Age hillfort consisting of a series of embankments. It is named after the Scottish King Duncan, another figure from the Macbeth narrative, though the archaeology predates the historical King Duncan by centuries.
  • The summit offers a celebrated view directly down onto the towers of Dunkeld Cathedral and the stone arches of the bridge crossing the River Tay. On a clear day, the vista extends north to the prominent peaks of Beinn a' Ghlò and Ben Vrackie.
  • Shakespeare suggested that Birnam Wood would move to Dunsinane, but he neglected to mention it would be carried by walkers panting heavily up the 'Stairway to Heaven'—the hill's notoriously steep pitched-stone path.
