About Big Hill of Glenmount

Situated on the northern edge of the Galloway Hills, this 382m summit provides a lonely, grassy climb away from the busier Southern Upland tracks. It offers an excellent perspective over the remote upper reaches of the Doon Valley and the dense forestry blocks that define this quiet corner of Scotland.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the hill's location above Glenmount, a farmstead and locality situated in the valley of the Muck Water near Dalmellington.
  • The summit offers a clear vista towards the 'Galloway Giants' to the south, where the distinct profiles of the Merrick and Shalloch on Minnoch can be seen across the undulating moorland.
  • Hillwalkers typically combine this ascent with the neighbouring Black Hill of Glenmount and Meikle Hill to form a high-level circular route that avoids the denser forestry plantations on the lower slopes.
  • Despite being designated the 'Big' hill of the area, it only holds a modest 13-metre height advantage over its sibling, the Black Hill of Glenmount, located just over a kilometre to the west.
