About Bidean an Eoin Deirg

Occupying a prominent position on the western arm of Sgùrr a' Choire Ghlais, this Munro Top offers a sharper, rockier profile than its parent peak. It serves as a superb grandstand for the remote Monar Forest, rewarding those on the long Strathfarrar circuit with clear views across to the isolated Lurg Mhòr.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Scottish Gaelic for 'Peak of the Red Bird,' most likely referring to the Red Grouse which inhabits the high heathery slopes of the North West Highlands.
  • It is almost exclusively climbed as part of the 'Strathfarrar Four' circuit, a high-level traverse that is famously dependent on the seasonal opening times of the private Glen Strathfarrar road.
  • The summit provides an exceptional perspective of the deep trench of Loch Monar, with the remote, pathless plateau of Maoile Lunndaidh and the sharp peak of Bidean a' Choire Sheasgaich visible to the west.
  • Despite standing at a significant 1,046 metres, it is classified as a Munro Top rather than a full Munro because the ridge connecting it to the higher Sgùrr a' Choire Ghlais does not drop sufficiently to meet the prominence criteria.
  • If you are visiting this summit, you have likely survived the gatekeeper of the Strathfarrar private road, whose strict evening closing times are the only thing in the Highlands more formidable than the weather.
