About Ben Shieldaig

Rising steeply above its namesake village, this rugged Marilyn is famed for the ancient Caledonian pines clinging to its lower slopes. Though modest in height, the rocky summit offers a front-row seat to the spectacular Torridon giants, providing an unmatched perspective of Beinn Alligin across the waters of Loch Torridon.

Did You Know?

  • The name Shieldaig is derived from the Old Norse 'Sild-vik', meaning 'Herring Bay', reflecting the Viking history of the sea loch that sits at the foot of the hill.
  • The northern slopes are home to the Shieldaig Pinewood, a rare and precious remnant of native Scots Pine forest that has survived in this corner of Wester Ross since the last ice age.
  • In 1999, the hill and its surrounding estate were purchased by the Woodland Trust Scotland following a successful public appeal to save the ancient woodland from potential commercial exploitation.
  • The summit panorama is exceptionally specific; it offers the best possible angle to appreciate the full scale of the Triple Buttress of Beinn Alligin and the jagged quartzite peaks of Liathach to the east.
  • While the ascent is relatively short, the terrain is classic West Highland 'rough bounds'—a complex, often pathless jumble of Torridonian sandstone and deep heather that demands more effort than the 534-metre height suggests.
  • The hill serves as an excellent vantage point to stare at the neighbouring 900-metre peaks and quietly congratulate yourself on having significantly shorter descent to the pub.
