Did You Know?

  • The name Ben Loyal is derived from the Gaelic 'Beinn Laghail'. Its origins are debated, but one common theory suggests it stems from the Old Norse 'lög-fjall', meaning 'law mountain', hinting at its potential historical role as a site for Viking legal assemblies.
  • The mountain is composed of syenite, an igneous rock similar to granite but containing much less quartz. This specific geology created its distinctive jagged profile, featuring four main peaks: Sgòr Chaonasaid, Bheinn Bheag, Sgòr Fionnaich, and the highest point, An Caisteal.
  • The summit of An Caisteal provides an exceptional vantage point over the Kyle of Tongue to the north, the sprawling waters of Loch Loyal to the east, and the solitary, hulking mass of Ben Hope—the UK’s northernmost Munro—dominating the western horizon.
  • Despite its modest height of 764 metres, the hill’s isolation and complex ridge system give it a much larger presence than many higher peaks. It is a classified Corbett and serves as a vital navigational landmark for the northern tip of the Scottish Highlands.
  • The approach from the north involves crossing the vast Sutherland peatlands; a journey that usually leaves walkers with a much more intimate, and often damp, understanding of the 'Flow Country' than they perhaps bargained for.
