Did You Know?

  • The name is a linguistic relic of the Viking age, combining the Old Norse 'tangi' (a spit of land or promontory) and 'fjall' (hill), with the Gaelic 'Beinn' added later as a prefix.
  • Specific views from the trig point extend south across the Sound of Vatersay to the uninhabited 'Bishop’s Isles', where the distinct silhouettes of Sandray, Pabbay, and Mingulay rise sharply out of the water.
  • On the lower southern slopes lie the ruins of Gortain, an abandoned township that offers a poignant glimpse into the island's crofting past before the economic shifts of the 19th century.
  • While the ascent is arduous enough to feel like a proper expedition, the summit provides a perfect vantage point to check if the morning flight from Glasgow has successfully landed on the tidal sands of Barra Airport.
