Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Beinn nan Cnaimhseag', which translates as 'Hill of the Bearberries'. These hardy, red-berried shrubs are common in the acidic soils of the North West Highlands and are found clinging to the rocky outcrops on the upper slopes.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point for observing the remote community of Scoraig to the west, a peninsula settlement famous for being off-grid and accessible only by a coastal path or boat.
  • Hillwalkers often pair this summit with the neighbouring Beinn Ghobhlach, creating a circuit of the peninsula that looks out over the Summer Isles and the expansive waters of the Minch.
  • Given the rugged, unpathed nature of the terrain, the 'Bearberries' are frequently outnumbered by deep pockets of sphagnum moss, which are more than happy to accommodate any walker who loses their concentration.
