About Beinn na h-Eaglaise

Rising steeply above the southern shores of Loch Damh, this rugged Corbett is defined by its sandstone terraces and pathless slopes. It offers a quieter, wilder experience than many of its more famous neighbours. From the top, walkers gain an intimate perspective of Beinn Damh’s massive eastern face and the surrounding Applecross hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Mountain of the Church'. While there is no building here, the name likely refers to the peak's steep-sided profile resembling a pitched roof, or its historical status as part of the church lands associated with Applecross.
  • Though it can be climbed as a standalone peak from the road at Loch Damh, it is most frequently tackled as an extension of the ridge from Beinn Damh, adding a significant section of trackless navigation and rough terrain to the day.
  • The summit provides an exceptional viewpoint for the sea lochs to the west; on a clear day, you can see across the Inner Sound to the distinctive flat-topped summit of Dun Caan on the Isle of Raasay and the jagged skyline of the Cuillin on Skye.
  • Geologically, the hill is composed of ancient Torridonian sandstone. Unlike the sheer, tiered cliffs found on nearby Liathach, the rock here manifests as tilted slabs and awkward, bouldery outcrops that can be particularly greasy when the mist descends.
  • Despite the name, there is no easy path to salvation on these slopes; the 'Mountain of the Church' generally requires you to earn your summit through a purgatory of thick heather and hidden, boggy troughs.
