About Beinn Clachach

Rising above the remote reaches of Glen Elchaig, this rugged Graham offers a quieter alternative to the nearby Kintail giants. Its heathery slopes and rocky outcrops demand a steady pull, but the reward is an intimate perspective of the nearby Falls of Glomach and the sharp, ridged profiles of the Five Sisters.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Beinn Chlachach, meaning 'stony mountain'. While many Highland peaks are rocky, this hill is particularly defined by the grey Lewisian gneiss outcrops and fragmented scree that litter its upper eastern slopes.
  • A common approach follows the long track through Glen Elchaig from Killilan, positioning the hill as a northern sentinel to the Falls of Glomach—one of Britain’s highest and most impressive waterfalls—which sits just a few kilometres to the southeast.
  • From the summit, the view to the north is dominated by the remote Attadale Forest giants, Lurg Mhòr and Bidein a' Choire Sheasgaich, while a clear day reveals the distinctive jagged silhouette of the Skye Cuillin across the Inner Sound.
  • At 642 metres, it sits firmly within the Graham classification, a group of Scottish hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet with at least 150 metres of prominence. This list was named after Fiona Torbet (née Graham) who published a version of the list in 1992.
  • Choosing to name a Scottish hill 'Stony Mountain' is a masterclass in stating the obvious, roughly equivalent to naming a local loch 'Deep Water' or a Highland glen 'Quite Damp'.
