About Bac nam Fuaran

Rising above the northern side of Glen Moriston near Fort Augustus, this high, rounded heathery dome offers a wilder, quieter alternative to the busy Cluanie ridges. At over 830 metres, it provides a sprawling vantage point over the remote Dundreggan Forest and the steep, jagged profiles of the Glen Shiel hills.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, translating as 'Bank of the Springs.' It aptly describes the high, water-rich plateau where numerous small burns begin their descent toward the River Moriston.
  • Despite its significant height, it is categorised as a Tump because it lacks the 150-metre drop on all sides required to be classified as a Graham.
  • The summit offers a clear, earned view across the Great Glen toward the Monadhliath Mountains, with the massive bulk of Càrn Ghluasaid dominating the view to the west.
  • The hill sits on the fringes of the Dundreggan estate, a significant area for the restoration of the ancient Caledonian pinewood forest.
