Did You Know?

  • The name likely originates from the gritstone industry; the area was once a source of stone for milling, and the hill sits above the historic textile and paper mills of Hayfield and New Mills.
  • The summit marks a major navigational turning point on the Pennine Way. To the south, the trail climbs onto the Kinder plateau via William Clough, while to the north, it follows a long line of gritstone paving slabs across the deep peat toward the Snake Pass.
  • Specific landmarks visible from the 544m top include the dramatic northern edges of Kinder Scout and the deep trough of Ashop Clough. On clear days, the Jodrell Bank Lovell Telescope can be spotted on the Cheshire Plain to the southwest.
  • A short distance north of the summit lies the crash site of a USAAF B-24J Liberator which came down in 1944. Large sections of the aircraft, including wing parts and twisted aluminium, remain scattered across the moor as a permanent memorial.
  • The hill is frequently treated as a glorified high-altitude roundabout by walkers rushing between Kinder Scout and Bleaklow, making it one of the busiest spots in the Peak District where almost nobody actually stops to sit down.
