Deadwater Fell

Standing as a sentinel over Kielder Forest, this moorland summit is defined by its radar station and location on the Anglo-Scottish border. It offers a commanding perspective of the vast Kielder Water below, with views stretching toward the Solway Firth and the distant heights of the Southern Uplands.

• •The name originates from the sluggish, almost stationary drainage of the Deadwater Burn at the watershed, where the flat terrain makes the direction of the flow difficult to discern.
• •The summit serves as a physical boundary marker between England and Scotland; the border fence runs directly across the top, separating Northumberland from the Scottish Borders.
• •Much of the skyline is occupied by a large Civil Aviation Authority radar station, a vital link in the UK’s air traffic control system that monitors the busy trans-border flight paths.
• •While the ascent follows forest tracks, the reward is a clear sightline to Peel Fell to the north and the expansive, man-made 'inland sea' of Kielder Water to the south.
• •The fell provides an excellent vantage point to appreciate the sheer scale of the Kielder plantation, which is the largest man-made woodland in England.
