Did You Know?

  • The name originates from the nearby town of Lynton, combining the Old English 'tun' (settlement) with 'Lyn', a river name meaning 'torrent' or 'stream' which refers to the fast-flowing waters in the valley below.
  • The summit provides an excellent view across the deep incision of the West Lyn valley toward the higher, heather-topped ridges of the Exmoor Forest to the south.
  • While the famous Valley of Rocks nearby is known for its dramatic coastal geology, Lynton Hill represents the gentler, rolling pastureland that characterises the boundary of the National Park.
  • Despite the name, the summit is considerably closer to the village of Barbrook than to Lynton, suggesting the hill has aspirations beyond its actual neighbourhood.
