About Little Millyea

Rising to 578 metres in the Galloway Hills, this forested summit forms part of the wild uplands within Galloway Forest Park. The hill's character is shaped by extensive conifer plantations, requiring navigation through forestry tracks to reach the modest top. A quiet Dodd and Donald Dewey, it sees fewer visitors than its higher neighbours.

Geology
As you hike Little Millyea, you are walking over the Shinnel Formation. This rocky foundation is made of wacke, a type of muddy sandstone.

Did You Know?

  • The name 'Millyea' likely derives from the Gaelic 'Meall Iatha', meaning 'hill of corn' or possibly 'hill of the ford', reflecting the agricultural past of the lower Galloway glens before extensive forestry transformed the landscape.
  • The Galloway Hills display an unusual blend of Old Norse and Scottish Gaelic place names, evidence of centuries of Norse settlement along the Solway coast followed by Gaelic-speaking communities moving into the uplands.
  • Little Millyea sits within the 300 square miles of Galloway Forest Park, one of Britain's most sparsely populated areas and now designated as a Dark Sky Park for its exceptional stargazing conditions.
  • The summit's forested setting makes it a navigational challenge in poor visibility, as the highest point is often unmarked and surrounded by uniform plantation, requiring careful use of map and compass to confirm the true top.
