Little Elrick

A Dodd and Tump standing at 576 metres in the Grampian foothills north of the Mounth plateau. The summit sits east of Glen Esk in Aberdeenshire, offering a modest climb through rough grazing and heather moorland. Its isolation from higher neighbours provides unexpectedly open views across the surrounding agricultural lands.

• •The name 'Elrick' derives from the Scots Gaelic 'eileirig', meaning a place where deer graze, a fitting description for this heather-clad hill on the southern Grampian edge.
• •Little Elrick's position on the NO16 grid square places it in an area dense with archaeological remains, including nearby hill forts and Pictish settlements that once commanded these southern approaches to the Highlands.
• •The hill is one of relatively few Dodds in Aberdeenshire, forming part of a classification that recognises hills between 500 and 2000 feet with at least 30 metres of prominence.
