Winterscleugh

Fancy bagging one of the National Park's newest members? Winterscleugh is your place! Tucked away in the quiet Far Eastern Fells near Tebay, it offers a peaceful escape sandwiched right between the A6 and the busy M6 motorway.

• •Don't get your maps mixed up when you're heading here! This fell overlooks the 'other' Borrowdale, a quiet valley in Westmorland, not the world-famous one near Keswick. It's a classic case of Lake District names popping up in more than one place.
• •Winterscleugh is a relative newcomer to the Lake District party. It only officially became part of the National Park in 2019 during a boundary extension, making it one of the freshest fells to tick off your list.
• •You'll find this hill in a rather unique spot, nestled between the historic A6 trunk road and the roaring M6 motorway. It's a pocket of pastoral tranquility right next to two of the main arteries connecting the north and south of England.
• •Ever wondered about the name? 'Cleugh' is an old Northern English and Scots word for a gorge or ravine. So, you're essentially climbing 'Winter Ravine Hill', which sounds wonderfully dramatic, especially on a chilly day!
• •The views from this modest summit are quite different from the central Lakes' craggy peaks. Instead of sharp rock, you're looking out over the rolling landscapes of the Lune Gorge and towards the distinctive, smooth-sided Howgill Fells.
