White Hause

Tucked away in the quiet Uldale Fells, this grassy Birkett provides an excellent vantage point over the dramatic pass of Trusmadoor. Frequently bypassed on the route between Meal Fell and Great Sca Fell, it offers a serene, pathless experience with far-reaching views across the Solway Firth toward the Scottish hills.

• •The name derives from the Old Norse 'hals', meaning neck or pass, while 'White' likely refers to the pale, bleached appearance of Nardus grass on its slopes during the winter months.
• •It gained its status as a distinct summit through Bill Birkett’s 1994 guidebook, which identified it as a worthy objective on the high ridge connecting Great Sca Fell to the lower northern slopes.
• •The summit provides an intimate look into Trusmadoor, a strikingly sharp, glacier-carved gap that separates the neighbouring fells of Great Cockup and Meal Fell.
• •Walkers visiting this top will find a stark contrast between the gentle, rolling sheep-pastures of the Uldale Fells to the north and the looming, dark mass of the Skiddaw massif to the south.
• •Given its location in the 'back o' Skiddaw', you are far more likely to encounter a stray Herdwick than another human, making it an ideal spot for those who find the crowds of Catbells a bit too much to bear.
