About Blunt Top

Rising above the head of Wasdale, this high-altitude shoulder sits on the rugged northern plateau of Great End. It offers a stark, boulder-strewn landscape typical of the Scafell range, where the ground falls away dramatically toward Sty Head. The terrain is uncompromisingly rocky, providing an eagle’s-eye perspective of the central Lakeland fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a descriptive reference to its broad, rounded profile, which stands in contrast to the jagged, vertical gullies and buttresses that define the nearby north face of Great End.
  • From this elevation, the view north is dominated by the massive bulk of Great Gable, while the scree slopes of Lingmell fall away to the west to reveal the deepest part of the Wasdale valley.
  • The ground is dominated by an extensive 'blockfield'—a vast expanse of frost-shattered volcanic rock that requires careful footwork, especially in mist or icy conditions.
  • At over 900 metres high, it is technically a mountain of significant stature, yet it suffers the indignity of being treated by most walkers as merely a convenient place to stop and check the compass on the way to Scafell Pike.
