About Grit Fell

Rising above the city of Lancaster, this broad-backed gritstone moorland forms a vital link in the Bowland horseshoe. While often overshadowed by its craggy neighbour Clougha Pike, Grit Fell offers a wilder, quieter experience of peat hags and heather, providing a high-level traverse toward the loftier plateau of Ward’s Stone.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a literal description of the local geology, Millstone Grit, combined with the Old Norse 'fjall', a linguistic remnant of Viking influence in the Lancashire uplands.
  • It is a key waypoint on the classic 'Bowland Horseshoe' walk, positioned on the high ridge between the popular gritstone outcrops of Clougha Pike and the summit of Ward’s Stone.
  • The summit offers a commanding view over the Lune Valley toward Morecambe Bay, with the southern fells of the Lake District, including Coniston Old Man and Black Combe, visible across the water.
  • Ancient boundary stones can be found along the ridge, marking the historic limits of local estates such as Abbeystead, which have managed these moors for centuries.
  • The traverse between here and Ward’s Stone is an excellent place to conduct unplanned experiments into the depth and viscosity of Lancashire peat bogs.
