Did You Know?

  • The name Grindon derives from the Old English 'grene' and 'dun', meaning green hill, a literal description of the lush limestone pastures that have characterized these slopes for centuries.
  • The summit offers an excellent vantage point over the Manifold Valley, where the river famously disappears underground at Wetton Mill during dry spells, only to reappear several miles south at Ilam Gardens.
  • Looking east across the valley, walkers can clearly identify the steep limestone cliffs of Beeston Tor, a popular site for climbers that towers over the confluence of the River Manifold and the River Hamps.
  • While technically classified as a moor, the terrain is far from wild; the local sheep have spent generations ensuring the summit remains one of the most well-manicured and tidy high points in the White Peak.
