Cruachan South Top

A modest summit overlooking Loch Awe in Argyll, positioned above the famous Cruachan pumped-storage power station hollowed inside Ben Cruachan to the north. The hill sits on rough, grassy terrain typical of this volcanic landscape, offering straightforward walking with views across the loch and towards the higher peaks of the Cruachan range.

• •The name derives from Gaelic 'cruach' meaning stack or heap, referring to the distinctive conical shape of the main Cruachan massif visible from the loch below.
• •The summit lies directly above one of Britain's most unusual engineering projects – the Cruachan Power Station, whose turbine hall is carved 396 metres inside neighbouring Ben Cruachan and welcomes around 50,000 visitors annually.
• •Despite its modest height, this southern outlier provides perhaps the finest view of Loch Awe's island-studded waters, with Kilchurn Castle visible at the loch's northern end on clear days.
• •The hill sits on the ancient geological boundary where the Dalradian schists meet volcanic intrusions, part of the same complex that created the distinctive horseshoe ridge of the main Cruachan peaks.
