Did You Know?

  • The name Conmheall derives from Scottish Gaelic, though its exact meaning remains uncertain. The addition of 'Cairn' in some references suggests the summit may once have been marked by a stone pile, a common feature of hills used for navigation or boundary marking.
  • The hill stands directly above Achduart, a coastal hamlet whose Gaelic name Achadh Dubhard means 'black-point field', referring to the dark headland that extends into the sea below the hill's western slopes.
  • A coastal footpath runs from Achduart past the base of Conmheall to Culnacraig and continues beneath Ben More Coigach to Strathcanaird, offering walkers a low-level alternative to summit bagging with dramatic sea views throughout.
  • Achduart was historically part of the Estate of Coigach, Lochbroom, belonging to the Countess of Cromartie, whose family held extensive lands across Wester Ross.
  • The hill is often climbed in combination with Ben More Coigach, as both lie along the same stretch of coastline and can be linked by the coastal path, though Conmheall's lower height makes it a gentler alternative for those seeking seclusion without the longer scramble.
