About Cnapan Loch Tilt

Rising above the eastern side of Glen Tilt in the Cairngorms, this heather-clad summit offers a quieter alternative to the more frequently tramped Munros to the west. Did You Know?

  • The name combines the Gaelic 'cnapan' meaning 'little lump' or 'knoll' with Loch Tilt, the small body of water visible to the north, itself named from the River Tilt which flows through Glen Tilt below.
  • Glen Tilt beneath the hill has been a contested right-of-way since the 1840s when the Duke of Atholl attempted to close the ancient drove route through his deer forest, sparking a long legal battle eventually won by public access campaigners.
  • The hill sits within the Forest of Atholl, once a vast hunting preserve where medieval Scottish kings pursued deer and wild boar across thousands of acres of upland terrain.
  • From the summit, the view north takes in Beinn a' Ghlo's three Munros across the glen, while to the south the plateau country rolls away towards Ben Vrackie and the Lowland edge.
