About Beinn a' Chaorainn

Tucked deep within the remote heart of the Cairngorms, this rounded Munro offers a sense of true isolation. Reached via a long approach from the Linn of Dee and often paired with Beinn Bhreac, its high, stony plateau provides a rugged platform for exceptional views across to the massive tors of Beinn Mheadhoin.

Geology
You are walking on granite from the Cairngorm Pluton. This hard rock formed when a massive pool of molten magma cooled and solidified deep underground.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scottish Gaelic Beinn a' Chaorainn, translating to 'Hill of the Rowan Tree.' While the name is common across the Highlands, it is somewhat incongruous here, as the high, wind-swept plateau is far above the natural treeline for rowans.
  • The mountain sits on a significant geographical divide, forming part of the watershed between the River Dee to the south and the River Avon to the north, while also marking the administrative boundary between Aberdeenshire and Moray.
  • Hillwalkers typically approach from the south, often pairing this summit with Beinn Bhreac. The connection between the two requires crossing the Moine Bhealaidh (the Yellow Moss), a vast, high-altitude expanse of peat that can remain remarkably saturated even during dry spells.
  • The summit offers a spectacular vantage point for observing the sheer scale of the central Cairngorm giants, specifically the distal granite tors of Beinn Mheadhoin and the dark, imposing walls of the Etchachan Crags.
  • Despite the name suggesting a woodland character, the most prominent feature of the ascent is the persistent bog of the Moine Bhealaidh, which has a long-standing reputation for testing the waterproof integrity of any mountain boot.
