A' Choineach Beag

Rising to 558 metres above the southern shore of Loch Maree in Wester Ross, this modest summit overlooks one of the Scottish Highlands' most scenic freshwater lochs. The Gaelic name translates as 'the small moss' or 'little boggy place', accurately reflecting the character of the terrain underfoot during the ascent.

• •The name derives from the Gaelic 'coineach' meaning moss or bog, with 'beag' meaning small, distinguishing it from larger neighbouring heights and giving fair warning of the ground conditions walkers are likely to encounter.
• •The summit stands within sight of Slioch across Loch Maree, one of the most photographed mountain-and-loch combinations in the Northwest Highlands, though from a rather less frequented vantage point than the standard viewing spots along the A832.
