About Sgurr a' Chaorachain

Rising steeply above the iconic Bealach na Bà road, this rugged Applecross Corbett offers one of the most accessible yet dramatic vantage points in the Highlands. While a television transmitter occupies the lower ridge, the true summit reveals a spectacular, unhindered panorama across the Inner Sound to the jagged peaks of Skye.

Did You Know?

  • The name Sgùrr a' Chaorachain is Gaelic, generally translated as 'Peak of the Little Rowans,' referring to the hardy trees that often cling to the lower crags and rocky gullies in this region.
  • A tarmac maintenance road leads most of the way up the shoulder to a prominent television transmitter on Meall Gorm, a feature that provides a somewhat industrial character to an otherwise wild landscape.
  • From the cairn, the view west is dominated by the Inner Sound and the Isle of Skye, where the distinctive profiles of the Trotternish Ridge and the Black Cuillin are clearly visible across the water.
  • Because the main approach starts from the Bealach na Bà car park at 626 metres, walkers only need to climb about 167 vertical metres to reach the summit, making it one of the easiest Corbetts to bag.
  • It is a rare mountain where the greatest challenge isn't the hike itself, but successfully navigating the hairpins of the road approach without meeting a descending motorhome.
