Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Càrn Gorm, translating as ‘blue cairn’ or ‘blue hill’. In Highland topography, the word 'gorm' often describes the specific deep blue-green or hazy charcoal colour that distant, grass-covered slopes take on in certain light.
  • Most walkers approach the hill from Achnacarry, following the track into Glen Mallie. From here, the ascent is a quintessential West Highland experience, requiring careful navigation through pathless heather and peat hags to reach the more defined summit crest.
  • From the summit, the view south is dominated by the massive bulk of the Ben Nevis range and the Grey Corries, providing a rare sense of scale of the UK's highest mountains that is often lost when standing closer to their base.
  • The surrounding glens were used as a rigorous training ground for Allied Commandos during the Second World War; the nearby Achnacarry House served as the Commando Basic Training Centre between 1942 and 1945.
  • Despite being classified as a Graham, the terrain provides a stern reminder that height isn't everything; the lack of a formal path ensures you’ll likely see more red deer than fellow walkers.
