Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, translating as 'Peak of the Chanters' or 'Peak of the Whistles'. It describes the acoustic effect of wind whistling through the narrow, vertical fissures that score its northern face.
  • It is home to 'Waterpipe Gully', a renowned Grade 1 scramble that provides a direct, atmospheric line to the top, following a deep rock groove that acts as a natural drain for the summit plateau.
  • From the top, you gain a unique, low-angle perspective of the surrounding giants, particularly the jagged skyline of the Cuillin Ridge and the steep, scree-filled Great Stone Shoot on Sgùrr Alasdair.
  • The terrain is composed of dark, coarse-grained gabbro; this volcanic rock provides exceptional grip for boots but is famously abrasive, capable of shredding a pair of trousers or gloves in a single afternoon.
  • It serves as a reminder that in the Cuillin, height is secondary to character; at just under 600 metres, it commands more respect than many mainland hills twice its size.
